1917 Lima 2-8-2 at the Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, AL

As we continued on southward from Huntsville (we had already visited a 1923 ALCO in Dora and a 1941 Porter in Tarrant), we searched out and found trains at the very cool Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham.

This place is visually astounding

Sloss Furnaces is a National Historic Landmark in Birmingham that operated as a pig iron-producing blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. This place is very cool on its own right, but as a bonus it has a few trains out front on display.

We blew right past this diesel switcher (because it wasn't steam!), not knowing it was a 1948 Baldwin DS44-660 (#73893). I will have to be more careful about that in the future. The "main" locomotive on display though was the 1917 Lima 2-8-2 (#5872).
