1831, 1834, and 1836 B&O 0-4-0's: The "York", "Atlantic", and "John Hancock" (B&O Railroad Museum)

The York




Early steam train design used a vertical boiler.








These models evolved into the "grasshopper" types like the Atlantic below. Not an original, but rebuilt from the #7 Grasshopper, Andrew Jackson to resemble the Atlantic.




These types locomotives were built until horizontal boiler trains came along which proved to be stronger and more powerful. They then became mostly yard switchers.
